Tesla is reportedly working on a successor to its now-defunct Roadster, but it likely won’t arrive until 2019 at the earliest.

According to AutoGuide, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said the new Roadster is “probably five years away” during a shareholder meeting. In addition to that, Musk says Tesla is working on “a fairly exciting upgrade to the roadster” scheduled to be revealed later this year, but didn’t go into specifics.

But until the Roadster can become a reality, Tesla needs to get a few things out of the way first: it plans to reveal its Model X crossover and a third electric vehicle in the $40,000 price bracket, as well as opening the doors of its first battery “gigafactory” south of the border.
