McLaren has announced its lineup for this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed, promising a handful of historic race cars, the 650S and the flagship P1, and “the latest track-focused model … to make its world debut.”
Until now, we expected that model to be the P1 GTR. When we told you about it last week, McLaren dropped just a simple sketch but billed it as the “best driver’s car in the world on track” and promising significantly improved performance and a power bump to 1,000 PS, or 986 brake horsepower. For the expected £1.98 million price tag, McLaren will also throw in driver training programs and even consultations with its driver fitness programs.
The automaker just dropped another teaser ahead of next week’s debut, but while it’s easy to believe it’s another hint at the P1 GTR, we’re scratching our heads. McLaren is still tight-lipped about the car, but we can now see a few more details, including Pirelli tires, a large rear wing and the company’s trademark LED daytime running lights.
But here’s the thing — while last week’s teaser pointed to a P1 GTR, the slatted side vents on today’s teaser suggest a track-ready 650S. Seriously, look at the P1. Now look at the 650S. See the difference? Just for good measure, here’s a high-res version of the teaser.
Could this mean we’ll see a Can-am or GT3-class version of the McLaren 650S? It’s possible, considering McLaren also revealed a GT3-spec version of the MP4-12C before it was replaced by the 650S. Regardless of whether or not this holds true, McLaren says a P1 GTR is on the way. We just might not see it next week.
