Is the Ford F-150 really Canada’s best-selling truck?

Ford likes to boast that the F-150 has been Canada’s best-selling truck for 47 years straight. The F-150 is undeniably popular and excellent features like the EcoBoost twin-turbo V6 continue to sway customers. But the question is this: Ford can easily claim the title of best-selling truck because GMC and Chevrolet count as two different manufacturers. Everyone knows that the only difference between a GMC Sierra and a Chevrolet Silverado is the badge and the marketing strategy. So if we combine the sales of the Sierra and the Silverado and combine them as GM’s true truck output, will Ford’s claim of being on top for the past 47 years still hold true?

According to this graph compiled with Canadian production data from GoodCarBadCar, it’s not even close. Though Ford is handily winning the sales battle in recent years, they can only really claim to be Canada’s best selling truck since 2009. Having the most popular truck in Canada three years in a row is still impressive but it’s miles away from being on a 47-year winning streak.

Many wonder why GM needs to have two marginally different truck brands. Though GMC is one of their most profitable divisions, it has cost them the title for best-selling truck for many years.

So there you have it. Is the Ford F-series really Canada’s best selling truck? It certainly is but it can only really claim that title for five years running. It’s still an impressive claim but it’s far away from being Canada’s best selling truck for the past 47 years.
