Although the so-called “Toyobaru” twins — the Toyota GT-86/Scion FR-S and the Subaru BRZ — have proven to be extremely popular, a new report suggests the BRZ’s days might be numbered.
At the moment, BMW and Toyota are working together on an upcoming sports car set to slot above the GT-86. But according to a new report out of Australia’s Drive, Tetsu Tada — the man behind the GT-86 and the BMW-Toyota project — says Toyota is considering switching partners for the second generation of its back-to-basics coupe.
“Maybe, but this is not decided at the moment,” Tada said in response to Subaru remaining involved in developing the next-gen GT-86/FR-S and BRZ. When asked if BMW could take over Subaru’s role, he said it’s a possibility. Tada also suggests the next-generation GT-86 could see any number of powertrain options, including an in-line engine, forced-induction or even a hybrid system inspired by the Toyota TS030 race car.
As for the short-term future of the Toyobaru twins, Tada says the company is “studying now for the answers” in response to enthusiasts calling for more power. Some of the possibilities include a larger Boxer engine, upgraded exhausts and intake systems, or even modifying the car’s final drive ratio.
