Following the launch of the i8 sportscar next year, rumour has it BMW will introduce a convertible version in 2015.
Citing its official source within BMW, enthusiast website Bimmerpost says the i8 Spyder concept has been approved for production and could debut in late 2015. The Spyder will be identical to the coupe (save for the lack of a roof, of course), meaning it will still be powered by a turbocharged 1.5-litre three-cylinder engine, rated at 131 horsepower. With the electric motor and lithium-ion battery accounted for, the i8 pumps out a total of 362 horsepower and 420 lb.-ft. of torque.
According to Bimmerpost, the i8 Spyder was confirmed last Friday after a production-ready i8 Spyder was shown internally to BMW executives. As per BMW tradition, expect the final production version of the i8 Spyder to closely resemble the concept, which first made its debut last March. The fixed-roof i8 will begin deliveries in March 2014 and will carry a base price of $135,925.
