In a seemingly never-ending tease of its next-generation SUV, Volvo has announced what will lie under the hood of the 2015 XC90.
As expected, the powertrains are promising. Volvo says the all-new XC90 will be available with a handful of gasoline and diesel engines, but the most noteworthy of which will be the range-topping T8 Twin Engine. Contrary to what the badge suggests, the XC90 T8 will be powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged and supercharged four-cylinder engine, paired to an 80-horsepower electric motor driving the rear wheels.

Handout, Volvo
The entire setup will be a plug-in hybrid, rated at a grand total of 400 horsepower and 472 lb.-ft of torque. But not only that, Volvo points out the setup will emit about 60 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometre, less than that of the Toyota Prius. In addition, the T8 can travel approximately 40 kilometres in electric-only mode.
In addition to the Twin Engine powertrain, the 2015 XC90 will be offered with two diesel engines. The D4 model will be available with a turbodiesel engine rated at 190 horsepower and 295 lb.-ft. of torque, while the D5 model will be offered with a twin-turbo diesel engine pumping out 225 horsepower and 346 lb.-ft. of torque. Conventional gas engines will also be available, including Volvo’s turbocharged five-cylinder and another supercharged-and-turbocharged six-cylinder engine.
Look for the 2015 XC90 to make its full debut later this summer, followed by an in-the-flesh premiere at the Paris Motor Show this fall.
