Aston Martin and Mercedes‘ AMG division have finally confirmed their partnership to develop brand-new powertrains.
In the agreement, Mercedes-AMG will co-develop a line of new V8 engines that will appear in Aston Martin’s upcoming crop of models. Given the V8 Vantage is currently offered with eight cylinders, it’s safe to think the new engine will likely serve as a replacement for the outgoing 4.7-litre V8.
All in all, the partnership seems similar to the one Mercedes-AMG shares with Pagani. However, in this case, Mercedes-AMG parent company Daimler gets five per cent of non-voting shares in Aston Martin, as well as a spot on Aston’s shareholder board.
As for where the partnership could lead following the V8 replacement, Mercedes-AMG and Aston Martin suggest “additional areas of cooperation.” Perhaps we will see a replacement for the 6.0-litre, Ford-based V12 sometime soon?
