This isn’t Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, but it’s probably the next best thing.
In what is likely the oddest of odd couples, Toronto Mayor Rob Ford and music producer Deadmau5 went for a coffee run in Deadmau5’s Nyan Cat-wrapped 2013 Ferrari 458 Spider F1 Edition (a.k.a. the Purrari), and the whole trip was filmed by a dashboard camera.
The ensuing 30-minute cruise to and from Tim Hortons resulted in some surprisingly frank, and sometimes hilarious, moments between the mayor and the DJ. Like when Ford ordered five espressos in one cup at the Timmies drive-thru (“I pound these espressos back,” Ford told a stunned Deadmau5, who responded, “That’s cardiac arrest.”). Or the moment the Ferrari was almost clipped by a typically oblivious Toronto driver (“I’m the first one dead on that one, man,” Ford said after the near-miss). The entire conversation was off-the-cuff, with topics ranging from the sorry state of Toronto’s roads, the CFL, and the mayor’s own affinity for speed.
“Everybody likes speed, I think,” Ford said. “If I’m up north, like Highway 11 … sometimes I open it up. If the cops catch me, I’m toast. That’s the problem.”
To which Deadmau5 replied: “Nobody’s above the law. Not even the mayor.”
Ford looked genuinely impressed – and maybe a little scared – the few times Deadmau5 opened up the throttle on the Purrari. “This thing is unbelievable.”
