As it turns out, the diesel-powered Chevrolet Cruze is just the tip of the iceberg as a new report reaffirms GM’s commitment to oil burners.

According to a report from Automotive News, Steve Kiefer, vice president of global powertrains at GM, says diesel engines could see a 10 per cent growth in popularity south of the border by 2020.

GM’s most recent crack at diesels in North America is the Chevy Cruze 2.0TD, which rivals the Volkswagen Jetta TDI in size, price and fuel economy. You might not see many of them on the road, but the report says the diesel Cruze met the company’s expectations and there will be more to follow.

“The Chevrolet Cruze diesel will be the first of many diesel-powered passenger cars General Motors will offer in the United States,” Kiefer said.

Currently, GM offers a diesel engine only in its heavy-duty Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups, but by 2016, we’ll see a 2.8-litre turbodiesel four-cylinder in the upcoming Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon.
