GM will relocate next-gen Cadillac SRX production to U.S.

GM has announced it will move production of the next-generation Cadillac SRX from its current Mexico plant to one in Tennessee.

Formerly a Saturn plant, it’s located in Spring Hill, nearly 100 miles east of Volkswagen’s facility in Chattanooga. GM is currently in the retooling process before production of the next-generation SRX kicks off.

In addition to the SRX, GM will build its new family of Ecotec engines in Spring Hill and will reportedly add a second vehicle to the plant’s output later on, although the automaker hasn’t specified what the new model will be.

GM hasn’t dished many details about the next-generation SRX, although we do know a new one is due out in 2016 — along with Cadillac’s new flagship sedan. The Ecotec lineup to be built in Spring hill includes 11 engines in three- and four-cylinder layouts, with displacement, horsepower and torque ranging from 1.0- to 1.5-litres, 75 to 165 horsepower and 70 to 184 lb.-ft., respectively.

Currently, the Cadillac SRX is built in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico, along with the Chevrolet Sonic and Captiva, a compact crossover reserved for fleet sales in the U.S.
