While the next-generation Mazda Miata is less than a week away from its full reveal, new rumours suggest the roadster could see multiple engine options when it hits dealers.

Speaking with Go Auto at the Australian launch of the Mazda3 diesel, Mazda Australia managing director Martin Benders says the next-generation Miata will be available with “potentially more engine options.” Among the possibilities is the latest Mazda2’s 1.5-litre engine positioned to serve as a base model, although the Mazda3’s 2.0-litre SkyActiv four-cylinder is a more likely option. Rumors also suggest the next-generation Miata could also see a turbocharged engine at some point.

Currently, the Mazda Miata comes standard with a 2.0-litre four-cylinder, good for 167 horsepower and 140 lb.-ft. of torque. In some markets across the globe, however, a 1.8-litre four-cylinder is offered.

Keep an eye on Driving for the 2016 Mazda Miata’s reveal on Sept. 3.
