The rumors surrounding industry darling triplets Toyota GT86/Subaru BRZ/Scion FR-S just keep coming and continue to make enthusiasts extremely excited. A new round of rumors says the Toyota GT86 could get all-wheel-drive and a turbocharger, which means the upgrades could also find their way into the BRZ and FR-S.
A report from Best Car magazine in Japan (via Autoguide) says Toyota is working with a Subaru-built 2.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder boxer engine for its next GT86, sold in this guise only in Japan. The report says the new engine (when paired with a rumored eight-speed automatic transmission) will be capable of 300 horsepower, which addresses the common complaint that the GT86/BRZ/FR-S trio is underpowered.
The new all-wheel-drive system would also likely be sourced from Subaru, which has one of the most trusted AWD systems in the industry.
The current lineup, which has become an industry darling for its engaging driving dynamics and affordable price, is rear-wheel-drive and is powered by a 2.0L naturally aspirated boxer four-cylinder with 200 horsepower.
