Did official specs of the 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata just leak?

Ever since the reveal of the 2016 MX-5 Miata, Mazda has remained tight-lipped over the roadster’s official specs. Until now, that is — thanks to a leak, we now have an idea of what we can expect under the hood.

According to Australia’s Motoring, the upcoming Miata will weigh around 1,020 kilograms, likely for the base model equipped with the soft top. This figure coincides with Mazda’s promise of the new Miata weighing in at about 100 kg less than its predecessor, which tips the scales at 1,110 kg in its lightest form.

Motoring also suggests the 2016 Miata will be powered by a 1.5-litre SkyActiv four-cylinder engine, rated at 128 horsepower. Yes, that’s slower than the current Miata by a fair margin, but it’s also worth noting that outside of North America, the outgoing Miata has been available with two powertrains — a base 1.8-litre four-cylinder and the more powerful 2.0L engine we’re familiar with. Chances are, the 1.5L SkyActiv will replace the base 1.8 in markets such as Australia and Japan.

The 2016 MX-5 Miata will be on display at next month’s Paris Motor Show, where Mazda is expected to announce the official powertrain details enthusiasts have been waiting for.
