The final big car show weekends of the season usually end with a bang, and such was the case last weekend at the Ocean Park Hot Rod show in South Surrey.
The lot filled up early and the selection of cars was astounding. Even a guy from California showed up with cars, in addition to some local carnuts who never go to car shows who showed up with their cars. Ocean Park owner Ron Ford let me get up on the roof to get some stellar photos.
A big renovation is underway, and he must have cracked the whip because, earlier in the week, the new facade of the dealership was not finished, but Saturday morning it looked great. Peter Trant showed up with his 1940 Hot Rod Pickup, dubbed “Half Ton Will Travel,” that he bought as a kid.
He paid $15 at a wreckers for it and, after lots of work, it ended up on the cover of Rod & Custom magazine in 1958. The weekend before, Trant was at the Supercar show with one of his other cars, a very original 1911 Chalmers.
After the Ocean Park show, I dropped by one of my customers to shoot one of his latest cars, a fully customized Lowrider ’56 Chevy Belair Convertible from an owner in Portland that was being finished and sent on its way to a big lowrider show in Vegas this weekend.
Then it was on to the BC Custom Car Association’s first car show in years, held in Cloverdale, followed by a stop at the BC Austin Healey Club’s annual picnic, where I got to take a cool group photo of, admittedly, my favourite car.
But I am biased and a Healey nut! The Shannon Hall at the Cloverdale Fairgrounds is the place to be Saturday for the 2014 induction ceremony.
Many cool cars will be lined up outside the hall, and inside the walls are lined with information boards on many of the past inductees. This is the place to be if you’re interested in Motorsports in B.C. In addition, there are a few good shows in the Interior and a swap meet and Toy Run on the Island.

To see a Ford Phaeton…a four door convertible…is rare, to see three in a row incredible.
