Porsche aficionados and gearheads everywhere, you might need a box of tissues to dry up the tears.
A 918 Spyder, Porsche’s $845,000 hybrid hypercar answer to the LaFerrari and McLaren P1, caught fire yesterday and burned to the ground at a gas station in Caledon, Ont., just outside of Toronto last night.

The video, posted by YouTube user David Jenkins, shows the 918 Spyder engulfed in flames immediately next to a gas pump. It’s still unclear who exactly owns the car, but AutoGuide suggests it could belong to entrepreneur Michael Wekerle, CEO of investment firm Difference Capital and panelist on CBC’s Dragon’s Den show.
We don’t know what exactly caused the fire, but one of the possibilities could have been excess fuel igniting from the heat given off the car’s exhaust system. Porsche Canada public relations specialist Patrick St. Pierre says the automaker is “very concerned” but can’t comment on the matter because no additional information is known, with the exception of the existing media reports.
“We are first and foremost happy that apparently no injuries and other damage have resulted from the incident as reported,” he wrote in an e-mail statement. “Porsche is prepared to bring its technical resources to help all authorities who are investigating the matter.”We’ll keep you updated with any new details that might emerge. But for now, a moment of silence for our dearly departed Porsche 918 Spyder.
