Hot on the heels of Lamborghini’s outrageous Asterion plug-in hybrid concept, Audi is looking to introduce electrified variants of the next R8 sports car.
Speaking with Audi reaserch and development chief Ulrich Hackenberg, Britain’s CAR Magazine says we’re going to see a plug-in hybrid and an electric e-tron version of the upcoming R8 debut next year.
Given that the Lamborghini Asterion is based on the same platform as the Huracan, and the next R8 will share its underpinnings with the Huracan, such a powertrain is possible in the R8.
Although specific details haven’t been confirmed, Hackenberg says the R8 e-tron will rival the BMW i8 with a 250-mile driving range. But before you think Audi is going purely hybrid and electric for the R8, the automaker will also offer the existing 4.2-litre V8 and 5.2-litre V10 engines.
