The Hoff reminds us how cool an ’86 Firebird can be

Ah, the 1980s. It was a simpler time, where justice and cars ruled TV sets thanks to Miami Vice, Magnum PI and Knight Rider.

This video, brought to us by the folks at The Aficionauto, takes a look at the automotive star of Knight Rider: K.I.T.T., a 1986 Pontiac Firebird. But this time, there’s someone special — David Hasselhoff, the man who played main character and crime-fighter good guy Michael Knight, takes the Aficionauto team for a drive.

The car is owned by Jennifer Catano, a devoted Knight Rider fan from California. Catano fell in love with K.I.T.T. after watching him crash through walls, taking incredible jumps and talking to Hasselhoff’s character. Ever since she was a teenager, she wanted a Firebird — even though her father said her it was just a phase and it’ll pass — and on her 16th birthday, it happened. She picked up a Firebird and added a light scanner, which was enough to make it K.I.T.T. at the time.

Today, Catano’s Firebird is a decidedly more accurate replica of K.I.T.T., and she even helped build another replica for Hasselhoff himself for his 60th birthday. Naturally, he’s in love with the iconic car, and if we do say so ourselves, he’s quite the talented driver.

Don’t forget to watch the video of Catano’s K.I.T.T. replica below. If Formula One uses steering wheels like K.I.T.T.’s and Google’s autonomous driving sensors are similar, what will K.I.T.T. inspire next?
