Audi’s next RS3 will sport a turbocharged five-cylinder engine

Audi is hard at work on a high-performance RS3 and we now have an idea what to expect under the hood.

Speaking to Top Gear (hat tip to AutoGuide) about the possibility of an RS variant of the A1 (spoiler alert — it won’t happen), quattro director Stephan Reil said the upcoming RS3 will likely follow in the footsteps of the Clubsport Concept and boast a turbocharged 2.5-litre five-cylinder engine under the hood.

The powerplant, similar to the one used in the previous-generation TT-RS, is expected to produce 360 horsepower at the most — so that the RS3 won’t step on the toes of other S and RS models in Audi’s lineup.

Reil also said the RS3 will be available initially as a hatchback, like its predecessor, but we could also see a sedan variant offered at some point. That means there’s a better chance of the RS3 making its way to North America, given the A3 sedan is one of the two main body styles available here.
