As with any revolutionary technology, Audi CEO Rupert Stadler says the laser headlights featured on the latest Sport Quattro concept will make it into production.

According to Automotive News, Stadler made the announcement during the reveal of the Sport Quattro concept during this year’s International CES in Las Vegas. It’s unclear as to how soon we could see them or on which production Audi, but Stadler did say the 2014 R18 e-tron Quattro, which Audi will in the 24 hours of Le Mans, will sport laser headlights.

The 2014 Audi R18 E-Tron Quattro will make its motorsports debut in April.

Handout, Audi

The latest Sport Quattro incorporates LED for its low-beams and matrix lasers for its high-beams. Audi says biggest advantage to laser high-beams over LEDs is the range: They can illuminate up to half a kilometre of the road ahead, which is more than double than LED high-beams. In addition, laser high-beams are about three times brighter.

In the pitch to bring laser headlights to the market, Audi is facing stiff competition from BMW. It intends on offering laser high-beams as an option on the i8, though that particular feature initially won’t be offered in North America.
