Honda unveils redesigned hydrogen-powered FCV sedan

Honda has updated its fuel-cell powered FCV concept with improved mileage and a new look.

The Japanese automaker says the concept can travel more than 300 miles on a single tank of hydrogen and can now be refueled in as little as three minutes, all thanks to a redesigned fuel-cell stack. Despite the 30 per cent decrease in size, power output is now 3.1 kW/L, a power increase of 60 per cent compared to the outgoing FCX Clarity.

The resized stack also means the fuel-cell powertrain now fits entirely in the engine compartment, which not only opens up much more interior space in the FCV, but also the possibility for Honda to expand this technology to other vehicles in the lineup. On the outside, the FCV wears revised styling that is more aerodynamic than its predecessor.

The Honda FCX is slated to launch in Japan in March 2016, with Europe and the U.S. following closely. Currently, the Honda FCX Clarity is sold only in California.
