Is it just me having a senior moment or does Volkswagen’s GTI Roadster concept car look like it just escaped from a Marvel comic book, the sort of thing the Silver Surfer might ride around in when he’s not flying around on his cosmic surfboard? A little over the top for Volkswagen, it looks like a cross between a Golf and a Pagani with the open cockpit of a Formula One car thrown in for good measure.

No matter its outré looks, this concept GTI should be plenty rapid as it’s powered by a twin-turbo 3.0-litre V6 that produces no less than 503 open-air horsepower. Powering through a seven-speed DSG dual-clutch manumatic and 4Motion all-wheel-drive, Volkswagen says the 1,424-kilogram Roadster can accelerate to 100 km/h in a very 911 Turbo-like 3.5 seconds on its way to a top speed of 305 km/h. Wind in your hair indeed!

The Roadster is actually the result of co-operation between Volkswagen and Sony Computer Entertainment. “When Sony asked us if we would develop a Vision GTI vehicle exclusively for the game to mark the 15th anniversary of Gran Turismo, we didn’t hesitate for a moment.” Says Klaus Bischoff, Head of Design at Volkswagen remarks who launched an in-house for the GTI’s design. In the end, Malte Hammerbeck and Domen Rucigaj developed the exterior’s lines while Guillermo Mignot was responsible for the interior. No word on whether any are fans of the Silver Surfer.
