Although it first debuted at the Paris Motor Show, Infiniti’s glorious Q80 Inspiration concept made its first North American appearance here at the Los Angeles Auto Show.
Most concept cars are an over-the-top exercise illustrating a company’s future direction. The Q80 is the first hint of a new flagship luxury sedan to compete with the likes of Porsche’s Panamera, or the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. With its athletic, futuristic profile, the Q80 suggests a sportier intent for Infiniti’s lineup.
Yet it’s also a showcase for a new 550-horsepower hybrid powerplant that may just find its way into the GT-R halo sports car. The Q80′s efficient powertrain and lightweight aluminum and carbon fibre monocoque, and enormous active grille shutters, all combine to produce a reported zero to 100 km/h time of under four seconds – while delivering roughly 5.5 L/100 km fuel economy.
The Q80′s more outrageous styling cues– notably the V-shaped rear window, suicide doors and silver-plated beverage flask – probably won’t ever see production. However, the strong shoulder line and sleek fastback are almost guaranteed to appear on future models.
