Mercedes-Benz will take to the North American International Auto Show with two new models aimed at bridging the performance gap between its top-level models and their high-performance AMG counterparts.
They’ll be called the AMG Sport series, and they’ll take on the likes of Audi’s S lineup, BMW’s M-Sport models and Cadillac’s VSport series. The German automaker just dropped its first teaser of the first two models we can expect, based on the all-new C-Class and upcoming GLE-Class Coupe, a four-door coupe-styled SUV previewed at the Beijing Auto Show earlier this year.
Mercedes-Benz says the AMG Sport series will share their powertrains with their lesser counterparts, but will have their engine output marginally increased. Other enhacements we can expect are a sport-tuned suspension and steering, upgraded brakes and tires, and unique cosmetic bits such as bumpers and wheels. Much like Audi’s S models, the AMG Sport lineup will be exclusively all-wheel-drive.
With this new range, Mercedes aims to make its AMG lineup more accessible and double its previous sales record — 32,000 vehicles worldwide last year — by 2017.
