Jaguar is making windshield pillar blind spots a thing of the past with its latest piece of technology.
Similar in concept to the ‘invisible hood’ found on the Land Rover Discovery Vision concept, Jaguar’s 360-degree Urban Windscreen uses a set of cameras pointed outward to the road. The images are then projected onto screens embedded into the windshield’s A-pillars, showing what would ordinarily be blocked.
“If we can keep the driver’s eyes on the road ahead and present information in a non-distracting way, we can help drivers make better decisions in the most demanding and congested driving environments,” Wolfgang Epple, Jaguar Land Rover’s research and technology head, said in a press release.
In addition to completely eliminating A-pillar blind spots, the system also makes B-pillars transparent for over-the-shoulder blind spot checks, as well as a head’s up display that shows points of interest, traffic light countdown timers and GPS navigation directions by showing a virtual car up ahead with arrows.
This technology is still in its research phase and no real-world demonstrations have been set, but it’s no doubt revolutionary in terms of safety for drivers and pedestrians alike.
