Porsche Boxster, Cayman expected to go turbo-four

On the heels of Porsche R&D chief Wolfgang Hatz saying most of the 911 lineup will use turbocharged engines, there’s a good chance the Boxster and Cayman will downsize to a turbocharged flat-four.

Speaking to Car and Driver once again, Hatz says Porsche is “working hard” on aflat-four scheduled to appear when the refreshed Boxster and Cayman debut as early as 2016. The move to a flat-four has been in the plannings stages for a while, but with Porsche finally committing to reducing CO2 emissions by 15 per cent, Hatz says switching to turbocharged engines “has to be part of the strategy.”

As for output, the turbocharged flat-fours will more than likely meet the flat-sixes currently powering the Boxster and Cayman — that is to say, expect anywhere between 265 and 330 horsepower. In addition, like the 911 GT3 and upcoming GT3 RS, Porsche will still offer a normally-aspirated flat-six on the top-level Cayman GT4.
