BMW and Toyota‘s partnership is bearing many fruits — most notably the rebirth of the Toyota Supra, which will also spawn the replacement of the BMW Z4.
In addition to the sports cars on the horizon, Automobile says the two automakers are evaluating the possibility of an entry-level hatchback, potentially spelling the return of a truly mini Mini.
“It’s still early days as far as the baby Mini goes,” an unnamed source from Mini told Automobile. “But when our new R&D board member Klaus Klaus Fröhlich traveled to America early in the new year, this was one of the subjects on his agenda.”
This isn’t the first time Mini has explored the possibility of a subcompact hatchback — in 2011, the Mini Rocketman debuted but was put on the backburner a short while later. But if this project sees the light of day, the hatchback will likely be based on the Europe-only Toyota Aygo and adopt the Mini Minor name, a throwback to the original 1959 Morris Minor.
