A joint project between Mitsubishi and Nissan — that ultimately would’ve resulted in a much-needed Galant replacement — is now on the backburner.
According to Automotive News (hat tip to Autos.ca), Don Swearingen, Mitsibishi’s executive vice president, told dealers yesterday “that the plan has stalled.”
The initial plan called for Mitsubishi to offer a rebadged version of a model sold by Renault-Samsung, Nissan’s South Korean subsidiary, by next year. The sedan was to be billed as a successor to the Galant, which was axed in 2012.
However, Searingen says Mitsubishi is still on track to launch a refreshed Outlander this July, along with a redesigned RVR and Lancer by the end of 2015 — the latter of which will also be based off another Renault-Samsung model. Expect to also see a new Mirage sedan and hatchback, along with a plug-in electric Outlander, early next year.
