Cadillac revealed the swoopy ATS Coupe in Detroit. It will be an important car. As it stands, 70% of ATS buyers are new to the brand. The Coupe, based on its looks alone, should build on that number as it takes Cadillac’s basic Art and Science design philosophy and amps it up. The fast roofline, two-door format and bustled tail make for a very attractive take on the sedan.

Number of doors aside, the biggest change is found in its dimensions. It is 20-millimetres wider up front and 40-mm in the rear. The reason is to accommodate the new 18-inch wheels that wear 225/40s up front and 255/35s at the back. There are two engine choices: GM’s 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder with 272 horsepower and the up-level 3.6L V6 that develops a healthy 321 hp. As for the rest of it, well, the Coupe mirrors the sedan in terms of content and trims.
The other change is found in the Cadillac crest. Over the years, there have been 38 versions. The new wider, lower (and much larger!) badge rolls out this year. As employed on the ATS Coupe it looks almost too big sitting in the ATS’s slim grille and rear deck lid.
