Ford recalling 221,000 vehicles over door handle, seat belt issues

Ford is calling back 204,945 Taurus and Lincoln MKS sedans from 2010-2013, as well as 16,091 copies of the 2014 Transit Connect van.

The Taurus and MKS recall is centred around an issue with a spring that controls the interior door handle mechanism. Ford says the spring could become unseated, leading to the door potentially unlatching in a side-impact crash. Also included in this recall is Ford’s Taurus-based Police Interceptor.

Ford is instructing dealers to inspect all door handle assemblies and, if necessary, repair or replace the defective units free of charge. Automotive News says the affected Taurus and MKS sedans were built at Ford’s assembly plant in Chicago between 2009 through 2012.

As for the second recall, Ford says certain Transit Connect vans in the U.S. market and manufactured in Spain between November 2013 and September 2014 could have seat belt fasteners that were improperly tightened. As a result of the incorrect torque specs, the fasteners could loosen over time and fail.

To mend the issue, Ford dealers will replace and properly tighten not only the seat belt fasteners, but the cargo tie-downs in the cargo area as well. No injuries have been reported in either recall.
