Ford has taken the wraps off its latest high-performance model — the bonkers Focus RS hatchback, developed with the help of rally driver Ken Block.
Powered by its EcoBoost 2.3-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, Ford says the 2016 Focus RS pumps out “well over” 320 horsepower. If that sounds familiar, it’s because the engine is based on the Mustang’s 2.3-litre turbo-four, but gains a handful of modifications, including new cylinder heads and head gaskets, stronger cast-iron cylinder liners, a new twin-scroll turbocharger and a larger intercooler. Topping it all off is a tweaked intake and high-flow exhaust system to help the Focus RS breathe better.

One of the key areas in which the Focus RS differs from its predecessor is how it puts its 320+ horsepower to the pavement via its six-speed manual transmission. While the previous model was front-wheel-drive, Ford has equipped the new Focus RS with an all-wheel-drive system that can vary the amount of torque sent to each axle, and from side-to-side. For example, Ford says the RS can send up to 70 per cent of torque to the rear, and divvy that up another 70 per cent to help the car rotate better around corners.In fact, Ford Global Product Development vice president Raj Nair says the Focus RS has a feature that allows the driver to engage in “controlled oversteer drifts”, an enhancement that was no doubt influenced by Ken Block himself.

Polishing off the Focus RS’ performance credentials is a handful of enhancements to the car’s suspension system, including stiffer springs and thicker anti-roll bars, as well as a set of 235/35 Michelin Pilot Sport tires wrapped around 19-inch wheels. If that’s not enough grip, Ford will let you step up to stickier Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires.As for availability, Ford hasn’t said when we can expect it at dealerships — but at least under the company’s new One Ford strategy, we’ll be seeing it in North America very soon.
