Mitsubishi back in talks with Nissan for midsize sedan replacement

Mitsubishi is still looking to fill a hole in its lineup — and it has turned to the other side of the Nissan-Renault alliance for help.

According to Automotive News, a source from Nissan who is familiar with the matter says Mitsubishi is in talks with Nissan to provide a new midsize sedan for the North American market. The car would serve as a replacement for the Galant, a model which Mitsubishi axed in 2012.

Recently, Mitsubishi’s midsize-sedan plans were put on hold  indefinitely after talks fell through with Renault. Mitsubishi had originally hoped to rebadge a Korean-made Renault-Samsung sedan.

A Mitsubishi spokesman didn’t confirm the talks were officially underway, but said working with Nissan is “one option.” This time around, Mitsubishi also isn’t necessarily looking for a car to rebadge; the Japanese automaker is willing to develop the model on its own, but reportedly needs a partner to help cover research and development costs.
