Nissan has confirmed at least one of its rear-wheel-drive IDx cars, a pair of concepts that throw back to the Datsun 510, will find their way into production.
According to Drive Australia, Nissan executive vice president Andy Palmer confirmed the news at the Detroit auto show. He didn’t say whether it will be the IDx Freeflow or the high-performance IDx NISMO that will be built, only that “we will definitely do one of them.”
Regardless of which IDx will be built, these will be Nissan’s answer to the Subaru BRZ and Scion FR-S twins. Which, by the way, Palmer himself called “midlife crisis cars.” The production IDx in question is due out around 2016 and might actually see a manual transmission. When the IDx duo were unveiled at last year’s Tokyo Motor Show, Nissan said the Freeflow would likely see a turbocharged four-cylinder between 1.2- and 1.5-litres, while the NISMO variant would be powered by a 1.6-litre turbo-four.
At this year’s Detroit auto show, Kia unveiled the GT4 Stinger, yet another fighter aimed at the BRZ and the FR-S. Seeing the GT4, as well as the IDx hit the market will no doubt be good news for fans of cheap speed.
