On the heels of its official debut in less than two weeks, Audi has begun to tease the next-generation R8.
Along with standard LED headlights, the 2016 R8 will offer option laser headlights outside of North America. The system is found on the outgoing R8 LMX. That model uses a laser module in the high beam portion of the headlight assembly, a technology similar to the one found on the R18 race car, fielded by Audi in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Unfortunately, due to regulations, we won’t see this option in North America.
In addition to the headlight teaser, we now have a good idea as to what we can expect under the skin of the R8. According to MotorAuthority, Audi quattro performance division chief Heinz Hollerweger says the new R8 features carbon fibre in the chassis structure and body panels, contributing to weight savings of around 145 lbs compared to the current R8.
As for what lies under the hood, Audi will initially offer the R8 with the existing 5.2-litre V10, rated at 601 horsepower and 413 lb.-ft. of torque. It’s said the V8 will be offered in the R8 once again at some point, as well as an all-electric e-tron version. Unlike the current R8, the only transmission option for the forthcoming model will be Audi’s seven-speed, dual-clutch S-tronic gearbox.
Last but not least, the 2016 R8 is set to receive Audi’s new Virtual Cockpit system. First seen on the new TT, the system essentially shows all vital information — gauges, infotainment settings, and navigation directions, tire pressure, etc. — on a configurable 12.3-inch screen immediately in front of the driver.
We’ll bring you the latest on the 2016 Audi R8 when the Geneva Motor Show opens its doors on March 3.
