Chevy Bolt could be renamed before it hits production

GM hasn’t made it a secret that it intends to build the Chevrolet Bolt, but whether the name stays remains to be seen.

Speaking to the Detroit Free Press, GM North America president Alan Batey has noticed the possibility of some people mixing up the Bolt with its bigger brother, the Chevy Volt.

“Some people think it’s confusing,” Batey said. “People are having some fun with it. It is generating awareness, which is good. It’s so conversational.”

Batey said GM is still in the “decision phase” in terms of determining the car’s final name. But because the Bolt and Volt are targeted at two different types of consumers, Batey also believes there won’t be any confusion on showroom floors.

The Chevrolet Bolt was introduced earlier this year at the Detroit Auto Show, billed as a fully-electric car that can travel up to 200 miles on a single charge and cost around the $30,000 mark. When it goes into production, the Bolt — if GM ends up calling it that — will be built in the same factory as the Buick Verano and Chevrolet Sonic.
