Mercedes-Benz is expanding its cargo van lineup in North America with a new model.
Known as the Vito in global markets, the Mercedes-Benz Metris made its official North American debut yesterday at the NTEA World Truck Show in Indianapolis yesterday. It’s set to hit dealers in October of this year as a smaller alternative to the Sprinter.
The Metris will be powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder gas engine, good for 208 horsepower and 258 lb.-ft. of torque. That kick will be sent to the rear wheels via a seven-speed automatic transmission.
While we’re used to seeing the three-pointed star affixed to some of the finest luxury offerings, the Mercedes-Benz Metris is big news for those who need a workhorse. The Metris is both longer and wider than the Ford Transit Connect and Nissan NV200, and comes standard with a crosswind detection system that makes the van more manageable in heavy winds, along with an attention assistance feature that can detect when drivers are drowsy or distracted.
Along with the cargo van, Mercedes-Benz will offer a passenger version of the Metris. The cargo van will start at $33,900 in Canada, while the passenger variant will retail for $37,900.
