GM has issued a recall affecting 64,000 Chevrolet Volt hybrids from the 2011 to 2013 model years.

According to Automotive News, GM has come up with a software update to the affected Volt sedans that limits how long the car can be left idling.

If the Volt is in electric mode and the driver forgets to switch it off, the battery will eventually drain and the gasoline engine will kick in. If you’re in an enclosed space, this means carbon monoxide will build up.

Currently, the Volt will begin chiming to notify the driver if the car hasn’t been turned off. GM’s fix will limit the amount of time that the Volt can idle when the ignition is left in the “on” position.

So far, GM is aware of two injuries linked to the problem – both a result of carbon monoxide exposure.
