Mercedes-Benz is considering taking on the likes of the Audi TT.
That’s the latest word from AutoBild (hat tip to AutoGuide), which says the next-generation A-Class is already in the development process. Along with the expected hatchback, Mercedes-Benz is reportedly working on a coupe variant billed as a TT competitor.
Powertrain options likely won’t differ much from what’s currently offered. In Europe, the A-Class is available with a handful of diesel or gasoline four-cylinder engines, including the 2.0-litre turbo-four used in the CLA and GLA 45 AMG. It’s also said base models of the next-generation A-Class will be front-wheel-drive, while higher-end trims will be AWD.
The A-Class coupe hasn’t been officially announced, but if the rumour hols true, it will likely debut as a concept sometime around 2017 or 2018 and draw styling inspiration from the Mercedes-AMG GT.
The idea of an A-Class coupe isn’t that far-fetched. We’ve already seen the flagship AMG GT and S-Class coupes, and a C-Class coupe is rumoured to debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show this September. The E-Class is also due for a redesign soon, and we’ll likely see coupe (and convertible) versions in that lineup, too.
