Honda hasn’t sold a Civic hatchback in North America for more than a decade, but could change when the next-generation model is introduced.
According to a new report, Honda will begin building the upcoming Civic hatchback in its Swindon, U.K. plant starting next summer. Although one of its production lines is currently idle, the plant is capable of putting out some 250,000 vehicles per year when it’s running at full capacity.
Billed as a competitor to the likes of the five-door Ford Focus, Hyundai Elantra GT, Mazda3, Subaru Impreza and Volkswagen Golf, anywhere between 40,000 and 50,000 Civic hatchbacks built in Swindon will be sent across the Atlantic to our shores.
Honda hopes the move will make better use of the factory, even though it still won’t be operating at full capacity when next-gen Civic hatchback production kicks off.
