With the 2016 Camaro set to debut in less than two months, official details have slowly begun to trickle out.

Following this week’s badge tease, GM has officially announced the next-generation Camaro will be built on its Alpha chassis. Similar to the one underpinning the Cadillac ATS and CTS, this means the upcoming muscle car will be lighter, more refined and provide better driving dynamics than the current model.

But the Alpha underpinnings doesn’t necessarily mean smaller dimensions. Mark Reuss, GM’s executive vice president in charge of Global Product Development, says the chassis had its front structure lengthened and track widened specifically for the Camaro.

The Camaro will get the Corvette's 6.2-litre V8 engine, but about 20 per cent of it will be reworked to accommodate the Camaro's platform.

Handout, Chevrolet

That being said, the 2016 Camaro will still be considerably different than the outgoing generation. More than 70 per cent of the parts and componets will be unique to the Camaro, and GM says only the bowtie and SS badges will be carried over.

From today’s announcement, perhaps the biggest news of all is what will lie under the hood. The Corvette’s 6.2-litre V8 engine will be available in the Camaro, but about 20 per cent of it will be reworked to fit the Camaro – including a revised, “tri-Y” style exhaust manifold.

Have a listen to the 2016 Camaro and its 6.2-litre V8 below, ahead of its official debut set for May 16 in Detroit.
