When it comes to automotive technology, new car buyers prefer collision avoidance safety features over audio and entertainment technology, a new survey conducted by J.D. Power suggests.

“There is a tremendous interest in collision protection technologies across all generations, which creates opportunities across the market,” Kristin Kolodge, J.D. Power’s executive director in charge of driver interaction and HMI research division.

Looking at a total of 59 vehicle features across six main categories – entertainment and connectivity, comfort and convenience, collision protection, driving assistance, navigation, and driving efficiency – J.D. Power found buyers are most interested in features that essentially reduce the overall burden of driving.

Features such as blind spot monitors, night vision and collision mitigation systems lead, while two driving assistance technologies – camera rear-view mirrors and self-healing paint – round out the survey’s top five results.

As for the least-preferred technologies, Kolodge points out fewer drivers prefer features geared towards efficiency, such as active grille shutters and solar roofs “because of other efforts automakers are taking to improve fuel economy, as well as relatively low fuel prices at the present time.”
