Audi has dropped a teaser of what we can expect from its Tesla-fighting SUV.
Speaking to Automotive News, Audi R&D chief Rupert Stadler is still on the fence about fully electric vehicles and that plug-in hybrids will still be the answer, even 10 to 15 years from now, when it comes to a balancing urban journeys with electric power and an internal combustion engine for longer trips.
That being said, with the prospect of more quick-charging stations coming up in the future, Stadler is still committed to taking on the Tesla Model X with a new SUV. Teased in the image above, it will be based on the Q5 and is expected to arrive as early as 2018 with a range of 500 kilometres and a battery that can be recharged to 80 per cent in 20 minutes when using a quick-charge station.
Under the skin, which is expected to be completely different than the Q5, the SUV will be underpinned by Audi’s second-generation MLB platform structure, lending to weight savings that will ultimately benefit range.
