Eventually, mankind will likely get tired of traveling from point A to B on Earth. When that happens, Ferrari has us covered.

Turns out, Ferrari design head Flavio Manzoni is a bit of a sci-fi geek. His latest vision reflects that, straying considerably from the sultry four-wheeled transportation typically grounded by gravity.

“It all started as a bit of fun,” he told Forum Trends magazine about his most recent project, a spaceship wearing the Ferrari badge. “At first it was a sketch, or rather, a series of sketches. Then it developed into a rendering.”

For a spaceship, it’s striking and beautiful, complete with smooth surfaces and a subtle red band separating the two portions of its fuselage. Manzoni borrowed design elements from the 1970 Ferrari Modulo concept and the LaFerrari – most notably the front end inspired by the hybrid hypercar’s front splitter.

The 1970 Ferrari Modulo concept also inspired the spaceship.

“I tried to imagine something that can fly in the future, since there will be less and less space available on the ground,” Manzoni said. “And I focused on creating a little craft that’s different than my childhood dream, when I thought that a car of the future would slip on a cushion.”

Of course, Ferrari’s past and present cars didn’t serve as the only inspiration for the project. Manozi says he was influenced by Flash Gordon and designers Joe Cesare Colombo and Pierre Paulin.
