Porsche to decide on 911 hybrid by end of 2015

As if Porsche turbocharging most of the 911 lineup wasn’t enough for enthusiasts, the German automaker is considering a plug-in hybrid variant.

That’s the latest word from from Automotive News, which spoke to CEO Matthias Mueller. Porsche has until the end of the year to decide whether or not to go ahead with the model.

“Why not?” Mueller said when asked about a 911 plug-in hybrid. “That is a technique which we at Porsche are all very familiar with, so we can suppose that we could have plug-ins all over the model range, not only to save fuel but also to boost the performance of these cars.”

Currently, there are three plug-in hybrid vehicles in Porsche’s lineup – the Cayenne and Panamera e-hybrid, as well as the 918 Spyder. Despite the fact the 918 Spyder proves hybrids can be geared towards mind-boggling performance, many Porsche purists would undoubtedly view an electrified 911 as sacrilege.

Regardless, Mueller says another electric Porsche is coming and the 911 will “possibly” be the next one. A refreshed 911 is due at this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show in September, but don’t expect the hybrid variant around then.
