For those who think BBC’s revised version of Top Gear won’t live up to expectations, Netflix might be your biggest hope.
According to The Mirror (hat tip to Engadget), Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May, along with former Top Gear producer Andy Wilman, are in talks with Netflix to create a new car show.
The move to Netflix has been rumoured since Jeremy Clarkson lost his job as host in March and House of Cars is tipped to be the name of the new show – a spin on House of Cards, a Netflix-exclusive political drama starring Kevin Spacey.
Another network in the running is Britain’s ITV, though one source tells The Mirror that partnership could result in a few wrinkles.
“The headache with ITV is going to be the potential conflicts of interests with advertisers,” the unnamed source said. “What would they do if Jaguar or Volvo had a sponsorship deal but they wanted to berate its latest new car? Jeremy doesn’t like being told what to do. It could cause huge arguments.”
That potential problem won’t be an issue should the team move to Netflix. Like the BBC, the streaming service doesn’t use advertising.
As for Top Gear itself, the remaining episodes of the current season will be aired this summer and the show is due for a reboot in 2016 with new hosts.
If you can’t wait until then, Top Gear Live – renamed Clarkson, Hammond & May Live – will kick off its first of seven tours starting with Belfast, Ireland next week. Catch the new teasers below:
