Ford could be making a return to Le Mans next month with a race-ready version of the GT supercar.
According to Left Lane News, the track-only Ford GT will compete in the GTE class of Le Mans, alongside the Chevrolet Corvette C7.R, Ferrari 458 Italia GT2 and the Porsche 911 RSR. It will be powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.5-litre EcoBoost V6, similar to the street-legal GT but tuned to produce over 700 horsepower. Of course, the race-spec Ford GT will also go heavy on technology with the ability to crunch 300 megabytes of data per second.
Inside, the GTE-spec Ford GT will have its seats mounted directly onto the car’s chassis. Though that limits seat adjustability, drivers can electronically adjust steering wheel and pedals for better ergonomics.
In a bid to keep weight down, the track-only Ford GT’s wheels could also be manufactured out of carbon fibre, a manufacturing technique first seen on the upcoming Shelby GT350R mustang. If not, they’re expected to remain forged alloy with carbon ceramic Brembo brakes at each corner.
If Ford does decide to re-enter Le Mans, look for the GTE-spec GT to debut at the 24 Hours of Le Mans next month.
