British talk show host Chris Evans could be throwing his hat into the race to become the next host of Top Gear.
Despite Evans previously stating he wasn’t interested in the role, Daily Mail (hat tip to CarThrottle) says the BBC Radio 2 DJ could have changed his mind after telling a local talk show host he is working on a “secret Top Gear film.”
“We’re doing a Top Gear sequence with an independent production company and we’re going to see how it goes,” Evans told Tim Lovejoy, host of Sunday Brunch on Britain’s Channel 4 network.
The comments drew sarcastic responses from Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May on Twitter. While Evans’ words aren’t a direct confirmation that this is an official audition with the BBC, he could be hinting that he’s at least getting more serious about the role.
On the flip side, CarThrottle points out Evans is also working to bring back TFI Friday, a satirical British TV show, and the “secret” Top Gear film could merely be a skit.
Previously, it was rumoured Jodie Kidd, Guy Martin and Philip Glenister were top three contenders to host the show.
