Hyundai considering Genesis-based luxury SUV

Hyundai wants to step up its SUV game with a new, Genesis-based luxury crossover.

That’s the latest word from Reuters, which spoke to four people close to the matter, but at least one executive says there is “no certainty” the luxury SUV could even happen.

“We are timid when it comes to bugger SUVs,” one of Reuters‘ sources said, who asked to remain anonymous. Hyundai faces a handful of hurdles in introducing an upscale SUV, most notably the brand’s lack of power in the luxury segment and the possibility of higher gas prices.

If the SUV happens, we could see it in about two years’ time. But that’s a big “if” as Reuters points out Hyundai’s track record with the Veracruz (though it’s since been replaced by the Santa Fe XL), as well as a lack of pickup trucks could also be a challenge for Hyundai seeking an edge over rivals such as the Acura MDX and Lexus RX.
