It seems that there’s some kind of celebratory event or anniversary in the automotive world every other week, but May 2015 marked a truly significant anniversary – the 60th birthday of the original Citroën DS.

Citroën honoured the occasion with DS Week, a special seven-day celebration in Paris. Highlights included a DS exhibition in the Jardin des Tuileries on May 23 and 24, plus a 600-strong procession of Citroën DS cars from around the world along the Champs-Élysées.

Both the DS and its simpler sibling, the ID, used a punning name. “DS” is pronounced in French as “Déesse” (goddess); “ID” is pronounced as “Idée” (idea).

The DS has been lauded by many, including by James May, who described the DS as “easily the greatest car in the world. The DS changed everything. It was a true revolution in motoring.” It was also named the most beautiful car of all time by Classic & Sports Car magazine.
