Chevrolet could add Cruze hatchback for 2016

The Chevrolet Cruze, one of the top selling small cars in Canada and the USA, gets a new look and dimensions for 2016 — one of which could be in the form of the much-loved hatchback.

Driving will have all the details on the new Cruze after its reveal Wednesday evening in Detroit, though we already expect the 2016 model to be lighter and larger, with a longer wheelbase to create more rear-seat leg room. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also, like other Chevy models, expected to be available features.

But a hatchback, especially on the heels of Honda announcing in the spring that it would bring a Civic hatchback to Canada, looks promising after Automotive News reported today that the 2016 Cruze would be sold in the U.S. market not only as a sedan, but also as a hatchback.

The Cruze is already sold as a hatch, as well as a wagon, in other markets, so broadening the model from a four-sedan to other versions has merit. The question remains whether Canada will be stuck with the sedan only or also benefit from the expanded model line.

Built in Lordstown, Ohio, the Cruze perennially sells more than 30,000 units a year in Canada, consistently landing it among the top five most popular small cars sold. In the US, sales are much higher: 273,060 units were sold south of the border in 2014.
