According to a report by Autocar, Volkswagen head Martin Winterkorn has confirmed that the work on a Bugatti Veyron successor is underway and that it will be powered by a hybrid drivetrain.

A top speed target for the new car has been set at 460 km/h and it will surpass the previous Bugatti Veyron Super Sport’s 0-100 km/h time of 2.5 seconds. The hybrid powertrain of the upcoming Bugatti will be based on a heavily updated version of the predecessors 8-litre W16, quad-turbo engine.

Officials involved with the car’s development say it will develop around 1,480 horsepower. Power will be sent to all four wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and an advanced multi-plate-clutch all-wheel-drive system.

Hybrid assistance comes in the form of a disc-shaped electric motor mounted inside the gearbox housing  in association with a litium ion battery. Despite the increased complexity of the hybrid system, Bugatti says the car will weigh no more than its predecessor and customers can expect deliveries for 2017.

Just 450 of the mysterious new hypercar will be built.
